What is video bandwidth and how does it work?
Video bandwidth
Bandwidth usage, transfer or you can call it simply as traffic. These are the terms used to determine how much data is transferred to the people who are watching the videos. The Panda Video plans have the storage and traffic as central points of choice (in addition to other advantages).
After the file is sent to Panda, the video undergoes a conversion and the files generated after the upload are stored and thus are available for viewing. Conversion is a necessary process to generate the different versions/qualities.
Depending on the user's connection and, mainly, on the bandwidth available at that moment, the player adapts for the best viewing of these converted files. Thus, there can be speed change (available files) while viewing the video without interruption. This is a feature that is widely used in any video streaming service and is available for your videos on Panda automatically.
The best bandwidth adaptation is done by the HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) protocol that delivers small pieces of the video to combine a fast playback of various qualities for the same user. That's why many times when starting a video it starts with a lower quality (for fast playback) and then improves the quality up the delivery to the higher quality versions.
Player
In Panda player, the Auto quality (default) looks for the best quality as the user's connection improves or worsens, however, the user can also force a specific quality. In this case, if the very slow connection opts for a quality that is much higher than its capacity to receive the data, it is possible that the video preview will be impaired with many stops for buffering (loading parts of the video). Therefore, the recommendation is that you always leave it in Auto.
Our player is also prepared to load the video as quickly as possible. You can compare with other players like Vimeo or Youtube and you will see that the performance of the Panda player is much faster. This is because we understand the dynamics of where videos are embedded and take some proactive actions to get the video to start almost instantly. Take the test and compare
Common questions
How do I know if the plan I choose will get enough bandwidth? A lot depends on your type of content and where the video is placed. Long videos, people usually don't watch until the end, as well as the autoplay on sales pages use more bandwidth in exchange for a better conversion. Even the image of the video itself can make a good difference, movies with many colors and movements are larger than static presentations. Ideally, test and modify your bandwidth and allocated space at any time on the dashboard. What we can say is that, precisely because it is an exact charge on bandwidth, it allows for extremely competitive prices.
How can I use less bandwidth ? For a better conversion and user experience, the ideal is to leave it in the best possible quality (we support up to 4K, if enabled on the account). The maximum standard used for videos hosted on Panda is 1080p. The player will always try to get the best quality for the user, if there is bandwidth (connection speed) available to the user. With that, the only way to reduce bandwidth is to reduce the video quality. A 480p or 720p video will have this maximum quality available. Consider video is your business, so providing a great sound and picture experience is part of the game, so we don't recommend lowering image quality to save traffic. The amount we charge on additional bandwidth is excellent, keep as much quality as possible.
Is bandwidth renewed monthly? Yes. Every month you will have the same contracted amount of prepaid bandwidth . It is important to say that prepaid bandwidth is not cumulative, so what is not used in one period cannot be carried over to the next period. You can adjust the contract according to your needs without any contractual commitment, so you can make adjustments at any time (the calculation is made proportionally). Excess prepaid traffic is considered postpaid and has a higher value.
Is there any bandwidth limit in the trial period? Yes. There is a traffic limit during the trial period. Unfortunately, we've had issues with heavily trafficked sales pages that took advantage of the trial period. Therefore, we decided to fairly limit the amount of bandwidth available during this period. If you decide to interrupt the trial period and start the normal flow, the amount of bandwidth is released and payment is made on the registered card.
How many students can I have in each plan? This is a common question that depends a lot on the user's profile, anyway, we estimated the number of students per plan that can be used as a direction for your decision. It is important to consider that this estimate considers other Panda customers, but that may not necessarily be the case for you as you may have a different user profile. The ideal is always to start with the Bronze or Silver plan and upgrade as needed in the following months until stability is reached. With new students and more releases, you can always make adjustments to your account at any time.
